Reel Words

Morgan Freeman, Christopher Walken and William H. Macy. How can you go wrong with a cast like this? The Maiden Heist. Very, very funny movie. Watch it!

Festivals, Not So Festive For Me.

I figured something out about myself in the last week. I don’t like non-music-specific festivals.

I went to that Davis Hippie Fest last weekend (Earth Day?) and was bored, bored, bored. It was all Hippie consumerism with a little activism thrown in and some music here and there. I guess I totally missed seeing the electric cars, which would have made the experience better for me anyway, but oh well.

Today I made a cameo at the Pacific Rim Festival in Old Sacramento. This one I have been to before and knew what to expect from it, so I thought. It was even less celebratory than the last time I went. It had a few Island Pacific themed booths and some scattered entertainment, but it just didn’t hold my attention.

Both of these I attended with my new boyfriend, Rob. Today my company came with a disclaimer of intended abandonment. He know I was going to bail early. We even left my car at the light rail station so I could leave whenever I wanted. I wanted to get out of his hair anyway, so he could take pictures without worrying about me. He does that. Taking pictures is his hobby.

I just don’t know why I am so intolerant of this kind of thing. If it is a music festival and I have plenty of water and my sarong (good for sitting on, shading the sun or warming me once the sun goes down)I’m fine. I sit, or I roam and listen and watch and I’m fine. I am sure I missed lots of cool stuff at both festivals. I am certain of it, but I can’t help it, I just had to go.

Movie Night

To my locals:

I am going to see Star Trek tomorrow night. 7 PM at Downtown Plaza. You are welcome to come out and join me if you like. My new boyfriend and some of my family will be there, but they will be nice. I promise!

A Happy Thing

I promised you I would start talking about the happy things, so here is one of the happiest.
As you know, I have been taking swing dance classes here and there. I love it! It is so much fun. I think I have a smile on my face from the time I walk in the door for the lesson and dance, till I go to bed later that night. I even bought shoes!
My new boyfriend is the one who got me into all this. Actually, I contacted him first, because he dances, so that we hit it off and are now a couple is pretty darn cool.
It’s Tuesday! Tuesday is dance night. Hooray! I love it!

Coraline, a Very Brief Review

When this book was returned to me, after four years or so on loan, I was shocked to discover it had hardly any pictures in it. I remembered the story so vividly, I guess all the pictures I remembered were from my head! So, when I found out Henry Selick was the one to remake Neil Gaiman’s fantastic story, I couldn’t have been happier. I am a huge fan of Henry, who also did The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach and Monkeybone . Henry did not disappoint me with Coraline.

The voice talents were great. The world the movie makers created was astonishing in its detail, depth and richness. Even the deviation from original story was good. There was an entire character added to the screen play and it not only wasn’t lame, it fit. I would see it a third time, which is unprecedented for me. I have never paid to see a movie that many times, but I would.
